Black River Gorges

Overview

Spanning the wild heart of the island, Black River Gorges National Park is the largest protected natural area in Mauritius—a sanctuary of dense forests, deep valleys, and rare wildlife. Located in the southwest, this vast landscape offers an authentic escape into the island’s most untouched and dramatic scenery.

Experience

Covering thousands of hectares, the park protects what remains of Mauritius’ native forest. Towering trees, endemic plants, and hidden waterfalls create a rich ecosystem that feels worlds away from the coastline. It’s one of the last places where you can truly experience the island’s original wilderness.

Visitor Information

The river itself is not a primary swimming location; nearby beaches and lagoons offer safer alternatives.
Conditions may vary during rainfall—guided excursions are recommended for inland exploration.
The region is accessible year-round, with the dry season (May to November) offering optimal hiking conditions.
